I hear people talk with great certainty about things they couldn't possibly know for sure...

And by doing so they reveal their ignorance.

For one of the main intellectual virtues is being aware of how much we don't know, how much is based on second-hand beliefs that we don't know the accuracy of, and how fragile the assumptions are behind much of what we take to be true.
