Targeting "scientific materialism" rather than religion

Religion is an easy target but I prefer to go after “scientific” materialism, which is just as bad, and in some ways worse, as it promotes feelings of hopelessness amongst the population, a feeling that is not needed if we have real knowledge about life and what comes after it.

The reason for this is that scientific materialism promotes the idea that we are powerless meat machines in a meaningless universe whose life ends at death.  This hardly promotes feelings of joy and meaning in the person who fully believes it and i may account, in part for ballooning depression and suicide rates in first world countries where such beliefs are common.
