The goal of extremists is to harass other people so much that they become radicalized, themselves.
If extremists had their way we would all become so imbalanced as to become extremists ourselves.
They achieve this goal by the use of violence on the innocent and by bullying people into supporting them. This builds resentment and can overflow into the break out of violence between groups.
The way to avoid this is to ignore the actions of the extremists, when possible, and when not possible act in a cool, calculating way to undermine the premise of the extremists.
