The trick to online discussions is to only respond to comments that are respectful.
Any disrespectful comments should be ignored, for to respond to them would be tacit approval of this approach. This sets a poor precedent and will lead to a deterioration in the discussion and may ruin it for others who are genuinely interested in honest discussion and debate.
The same goes for our everyday lives, of course!
