Morality: how to define?

There are many conflicting views on what defines a moral or immoral act. Some use a book as a guide while others seem to skew the meaning to suit themselves and their selfish aims.

There is one definition of morality that is hard to argue with.  That is the Golden Rule- to treat others as you would wish them to treat you.

I would like to see the application of the golden rule extended beyond just our behaviour towards other people to our treatment of animals and the natural world in general.

This means not unnecessarily causing suffering to other creatures and not imprisoning them or interfering with their ability to choose and live their own life.

Clearly for humans to survive we must eat and create clothing and shelter from the plant kingdom but this should be done in a careful and respectful way that impacts plant and animal communities minimally and has the least impact on environmental health.
