Science taught us that vitality doesn't exist, and that we are made up of "dead chemicals", identical to the ones that can be found lying inert in a science lab.
With this denial of vitality as a real presence, the belief in a soul also began to wane, replaced by a belief that we simply complicated machines, that only appear to be alive and conscious, But that are in fact already dead and gone!
