For their view is that everything in the universe is a machine, that works in a deterministic way, like clockwork (except, "magically", at the quantum level).
Real life is creative and not purely mechanical or deterministic (i.e. totally predictable, if we have enough knowledge). Real life is unpredictable because of its inherent creativity. Where this creativity comes from and how it's translated into a seemingly deterministic system* like the body, is not fully understood. People posit the existence of a spirit or consciousness that communicates intimately with the body, sparking a response in those cells that are attuned to it, a two-way process, and impacting on bodily functioning. This connection is posited to come through the connection of an invisible (to most people) subtle body called "the etheric" with the nervous system. This etheric body relates to the flow of the subtle energy called chi or prana through the body, and is what is targeted in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Fake life looks like real life but it is only an appearance, due to the complexity of "living" forms, as there is no real creativity or free will at work. This is the view of most materialists, at least those with a coherent, if mistaken, world view.
*Actually, I don't believe the body is deterministic, as each cell is intelligent and can make decisions, and I believe they are primarily spirit (i.e. having an inner life), as is the consciousness that we think of as ourselves.
