When can we trust a study?

Unless you are part of the data collection process that results in the raw data used by a study you can't speak about it's  validity.

Beyond that, you have to be involved in the analysis stage to understand the integrity of this process to be able to comment on its reliability.

Looking at it from the outside... These things can be impossible to ascertain.
