A discussion is something two people have who respect each other and arr not attempting to force their view on the other, but rather just sharing viewpoints.
A debate, on the other hand is an ego game that two people engage in in an attempt to show one's intellectual supremacy over another, or the superiority of one's opinions over another person's opinions.
Debates prove nothing except how good at debating a person is. They don't determine what is true or what is not.
The worst thing about a debate is how common they degenerate into name calling and end up with both people angry or upset or both.
Debates, though they may have their uses in public life, are generally a poor use of time for the common citizen.
After all, the goal of communication is not to prove you are right but to share what you have learnt.
