It's because it's directly observable in our own experience.

For those things that are not clearly demonstrable to the common man scientists cannot expect 100% agreement from the population on their theories or claims.

Those people who may be skeptical of the claims should not be punished for their disbelief, for this would be to deny freedom of belief and would be a form of tyranny.
